Traditional Homemade Sponge Cake Fight

There are so many new traditional homemade sponge cake that come from overseas to Singapore, such as Castella Cake, Ah Mah Traditional Sponge Cake, Original Cake and maybe even many more.

Since months ago all these store are filled with long queue and high hype on social media, so after so long we decided to join in and see how good each different brand is.

Even though being new, they have more outlets compare to other brands of homemade cake.

They are located at Bukit Panjang Plaza, Plaza Singapura, Vivo City, Paya Lebar Square, Bedok Mall, City Square Mall and the list go on...

And the scary thing is that the queue never stop, every outlet is filled with people.

On one of our random weekday off we happen to passby and with no queue, of course we grab and get home to try. Every customer is limited to purchase maximum 2 cakes, a total of 3 flavours (Original, Cheese & Chocolate).

Overall the cake is really fluffy & wobbly, strong egg smell and taste, believe there is a lot of eggs involved in every tray of cake. Sweetness level is well controlled, not to sweet, probably suitable kids and elderly. However our opinion is that for such quality, taste and texture, having to queue more than 30 minutes we will rather to skip the cake. Not special/unique/tempting enough to make us queue 30 minutes.

The first week when they first opened the queue was insane, you are required to queue like 2-4 hours just for a cake, everyone was so crazy over it. But now the queue kind of reduced and estimate waiting time is 30minutes to an hour?

Despite being the first traditional cake that landed in Singapore, there is only 2 outlets available in the entire Singapore, Tampines One & Jurong Point (New Outlet in Nov 2017)

We left Castella cake outside for a few hours after purchase and with moist soaked the cake become slightly flatter at the end of the day. Despite being flatter the cake is still really soft.

The texture of the cake is slightly moist/wet as compared to Ah Mah Traditional Cake, however taste wise this is so much nicer and not so boring like Ah Mah Traditional Cake. Slightly lesser egg taste turns out to be better, maybe this is the major different for two brands.

In our opinion, spending more than 30 minutes to queue for a cake is a little waste of time, however If I was to choose one to queue I would spend my time on Le Castella Cake than Ah Mah Cake. So well, clear enough you know who taste better huh.

Go try them and share with us.
